Denton: Music, Arts, Culture, Opportunity

Though it’s located at the north end of the DFW Metroplex along I-35 and the 288 Loop for easy access to all the amenities and attractions of both cities and their metro areas, Denton, TX is a world of its own little-city entertainment, enjoyment, excitement, and opportunity. It’s known for its thriving local music scene, its vibrant displays of arts and culture, its creative, small-town feel of community and fun—and is even sometimes referred to as a “mini-Austin”. But it’s also known for the rolling fields and endless acres of beautiful green pasture that comprise North Texas Horse Country, one of the largest concentrations of horse ranches in the country.

Why Do Residents Choose Denton?

Arts & Entertainment

Looking for something to do? Head downtown to Historic Denton Square, the cultural and entertainment hub of Denton. Here, you’ll find local shops, restaurants, bars, pubs, art galleries, and even performance art venues, like the Denton Community Theatre and the Black Box Theatre. And of course, Downtown is the heart and soul of Denton’s famous local music scene, as it’s home to a wealth of local live music venues that are filled with music just about any night of the week.

Want to experience some college fun? Head to the University of North Texas to experience more live theatre or concerts at the Murchison Performing Arts Center or the UNT Department of Dance and Theatre.

Community Events

Every year, residents of Denton, and many visitors from around the area, flock to Downtown to experience some of the best events in the area. The Denton Arts and Jazz Festival might be its most popular, or perhaps the Holiday Lighting Festival, or even the Texas State Fair and Rodeo… but you won’t want to miss the 35 Denton Music Festival, the Denton Airshow at the Denton Airport, the Redbud Festival, Fiesta on the Square—and certainly not football games at UNT (where you’ll cheer on the “Mean Green”.)

Parks & Outdoor Recreation

The City of Denton makes it easy to get outside and enjoy! It’s home to 75 athletic fields, 30 parks, 27 miles of trails, 10 recreational facilities (including a natatorium), two public pools, a dog park, and a water park, among other amenities. Here, you’ll also find the Shiloh Field Community Garden, one of the largest in the state, and the Clear Creek Natural Heritage Center, which covers almost 3,000 acres of natural preserve along Lewisville Lake.

You can also enjoy a huge variety of programs and activities—including aquatics, sports leagues and drop-in games, fitness and wellness classes and bootcamps, youth programs and activities, and even golf lessons and leagues.

Education

Denton public school students are served by Denton Independent School District.

Also in Denton are the University of North Texas and Texas Woman’s University, both of which are well-known and highly-reputed schools for both their sports and academics.

Employment

Denton’s economy is based largely in education, with its three largest employers its primary educational institutions—the University of North Texas, Denton ISD, and Texas Woman’s University. However, it’s also home to growing industries of health and social services, as well as manufacturing and retail. Other major companies in the area include Peterbilt Motors, Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital, Denton Regional Medical Center, Sally Beauty Company, Safran Electrical & Power, and Flowers Baking Company.

Shopping & Dining

Looking for big-box shopping and dining? Well, you’ll find it in Denton, concentrated around US-380 and the 288 Loop, predominantly, in major shopping centers like Rayzor Ranch Market Place, Golden Triangle Mall, and Denton Crossing.
